Tea, toast and nature, from our “steep”

Tea, toast and nature, from our “steep”. When we were given the opportunity to stay in a cottage on a farm, we were delighted to leave town and couldn’t wait to pack our bags to move. The farm is located in the center of the wheat fields of the Western Cape in South Africa. It was like heaven on earth. The 4 km gravel path from the national highway leads us to our new home. Driving with it we welcome the most state-of-the-art panoramic spread of wheat fields, rolling hills, sheep and cows.

The cottage was seen as the size of a small townhouse, complete with three bedrooms, an open-plan kitchen and a living room. A sliding door leads to a well-proportioned steep, (porch with a roof). It has proven to be ideal for casual dining and sitting at leisure, for comfort and just to take in the natural surroundings. Most mornings, summers and winters we took our breakfast out. Wrapped in warm clothes against the icy cold air during the winter months, we sit down to drink hot chocolate or tea and marvel at the top of a nearby snow-capped mountain.

A favorite manor was watching the intrusion of sheep. Their pasture was at a risk where they would spend the day scattering around to mow the grass. Suddenly a leader decides to trot the sheep hill. Being sheep, they were trying to keep a steady pace, one by one, one by one, one by one. This "sheep train" finally reached the top of the hill, turned around, and quickly ran back down again as if they were being chased! Watching these lamb episodes never stops us from rejoicing.

The farm also had a deer that had a bush near its habitat. When they had children we often saw them make fun of the little “flute”. They would sprint their spindle legs and chase each other on the field at a great speed and play a game of catch-catch. When they got tired, they would go back in droves and fall next to Ma Doe.

Other animals that were frequently seen included porcupines, hay, guinea fowl and of course odd snakes as well as various spiders. Some of these occupants were harmful animals, some of them were poisonous, yet, all parts of nature.

Spending several years on the farm was a very enjoyable time, but like so many things in life, all the good things end. Half of me is infected with pancreatic cancer. My days were over when he left because I didn't think it was safe for me to live there.
